As the doors opened on my flight to Hobart from Melbourne, I was greeted by a blast of hot wind and a smiling airline person saying 'Welcome to Hell'...
Our arrival coincided with the hottest day EVER in Tasmania (41.8 degrees) and a spate of wild fires, the worst of which are still burning across the island, leaving the air hazy and smoky and a big bite taken out of our first day's itinerary, as Mount Field National Park is closed due to fire risk.
However, we've had a great first few days, with some pragmatic re-jigging of the itinerary. We've just got back to 'the mainland' after a night on Bruny Island, where a packed 24 hours included 9 of the 12 birds endemic to Tasmania (including the tiny Forty-spotted Pardalote and colourful Green Rosellas, both below) and a spectacular night drive with Eastern Quoll bouncing here there and everywhere, chasing each other back and forth on and around the road: we saw at least 30 of these superb little marsupials, an amazing total...
